Like many other trainers Colin comes from a farming background. His Father and Brother David have always kept horses, from jumpers to show horses. His brother David trained point to pointers and Colin took over the reins from him; he got a few winners and then started to concentrate on racehorses.
Templeburn Stud is a family run team; Colin, brother David and nephew Lindsay who competed in many Irish point to points.
During the 15 years or so since Colin took out his trainers licence, he has achieved a satisfactory degree of success. As well as that spectacular Galway Plate success with Ballyholland in 2009 – the first Northern Ireland winner of that particular race in 35 years!
Ballyholland went on to run in the 2011 Aintree Grand National, while Carsonstown Boy struck credible second and fourth places in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham in 2014 and ’15 respectively. Marito was placed second in the 2016 running of the Foxhunters at Cheltenham and second in the Champion Chase at Punchestown, both times narrowly beaten by the highly impressive On The Fringe!
